Today Stillorgan is a suburb of Dublin, but back in the 19th century it was a village in its own right, steeped in history, its name is likely to have come from a Danish chief whose burial chamber was thought to have been discovered in Stillorgan Park in 1716. On Monday 31st July 1843 a private race meeting was staged in the grounds of Burton Hall, the seat of Mr Hall MP of Stillorgan. The attendance was ‘numerous and fashionable’, the meeting starting with a match in which Captain Ribton’s Rose d’Amour beat The Bee. The main Sweepstake of the day was won by Captain Ribton’s Knave of Trumps. There are no further records of a meeting taking place in the vicinity of Stillorgan. |
